5 Steps to Structure Your Dissertation

It is obvious that a structure of your dissertation highly depends on the subject you are studying, alongside with the requirements from your instructor or department. However, there exists a general dissertation structure, which is considered to be a standard. If we are speaking about an introduction and conclusion, they are almost the same in all cases, while body paragraphs may differ in some aspects. So, here are 5 best ways to structure your dissertation in a proper way.

1. Present a Literature Review

  • You have to start your dissertation with a short but precise introduction, where the aim of your paper should be presented. A good introduction has to contain a background information about a topic which will be discussed further. In other words, a reader should get a quick overview from the introductory part. However, it can be helpful sometimes to write an introduction after finishing all the other parts of the dissertation since you will be sure you have written about each important aspect.
  • The next thing you have to do is to write a literature review. Its main task is to cover the literature close to your concept, alongside with demonstrating the issues related to the chosen topic. A good literature review should also point out some previous researches on the same topic.
  • Your task is also about demonstrating that your dissertation is important and brings some benefits. Any dissertation is written in order to fill the gap in this or that kind of industry. So, you need to show that your dissertation really fills that gap and why the information given there is in need.
Make sure that a dissertation you are working on interests you since it will take a lot of time to finish it.

2. Explain Own Methodology

  • Clarify the purpose of your study. In this section, your main task is to show the manner in which the data for your dissertation was collected. Here the detailed explanations concerning methodology should be given.
  • Describe all the participants. You need to provide with a short but thorough description of any person, who was involved in the researching process of your dissertation. Be sure to mention all of them, including their participating goals.
  • Explain which tools were used for measurement. You have to state all the details about it while writing your dissertation.

3. Develop your study and results

  • Show the research results. It is not necessary to include all the results of a research. You have to list only the most relevant options, which are of a great importance to the dissertation.
  • You have to divide all the gathered results into several chapters. It will help to make your paper well-organized, where each new important issue is presented in a new chapter.
  • Then, you have to develop your argument. It has to be a central idea, around which all chapters will be built. This argument stated by you has to be supported throughout all the dissertation.

4. Conclude your dissertation

  • You have to write a solid conclusion, which presents the importance of your paper and all the researches that were done. Without an accurate conclusion, a dissertation can be considered as poorly written.
  • Also, you need to state some directions for further research in your conclusion. It will show that you clearly understand everything written before. You can suggest some narrowing questions which are still unanswered concerning your own research.
  • Check the effectiveness of your dissertation. It is important to show all the strengths and weaknesses of a paper in your conclusion.

5. Format and check your paper

  • Of course, you need to discuss your dissertation with the committee. As the committee, alongside with your advisor, specify all the requirements concerning the writing process. Make sure you understand everything and made everything in a proper way. Find out about a word limit, acceptable information, and the material that needs to be excluded.
  • Here, you also need to create a title page. Its format depends on the requirements of your educational establishment. After creating a title page, you need to think of an abstract and include it into your dissertation, following with the acknowledgments.
  • Having done this, you need to create a full table of contents and references list. It can be done in different styles, including APA, MLA, Harvard, or Chicago.
  • Your dissertation has to be finished with the appendices. Note that the appendices are not taken in the word count.
